The landscape painting of the 20th century offers the viewer a multi-faceted picture of bewildering diversity as does contemporary art in general. The span of dealing with the phenomenon of landscape ranges from the late impressionist pictures of a Liebermann or Slevogt, the Fauves in France, the search for unadulterated nature in exotic countries with Gauguin, Pechstein, Nolde or Kirchner, to the gray cloud pictures or photo-realistic landscapes of a Gerhard Richter or Helmut Ditsch, the melancholic oil paintings by Fritz Lattke and the works of Anselm Kiefer, who in his picture Märkisches Land scratched place names from Fontane's hikes through the Mark Brandenburg into the oil paint sprinkled with sand from the Mark Brandenburg. In the mid-1960s, Hans-Jürgen Kleinhammes and Werner Nöfer developed a pictorial direction under the programmatic term "New Landscape", which only used landscape fragments and a pictorial language reduced to signet-like and technoid abstraction. Andreas Loeschner-Gornau's landscape drawings show both captured spatial impressions of concrete experienced landscapes and landscape pieces collected as thoughts, which he materializes in his studio in the form of drawings. In his ink leaves, painted with bamboo quills, he himself is a tree and grows on the paper. He is not interested in the cultural landscape, but in nature's inherent drive to grow, as a process of life as a moment between becoming and passing away.
